As I sit at my desk in front of my window and watch it snow once again, I am thinking about escaping. I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never visited Venice. I hope to remedy this situation this summer if not before and hopefully with a stay at the newly renovated Gritti Palace Hotel. After years of traveling, I have realized that I appreciate staying at hotels that reflect the culture of the city in which they reside. While I couldn't live in a gilded rococo decor in New York, it's obviously perfectly suited to the history of Venice. If this 15th-century palazzo was good enough for Ernest Hemingway than I think it's good enough for me too.
