This weekend is going to be French filled for me. Opening Friday is the new film Farewell, My Queen (Les Adieux à la Reine) by by Benoît Jacquot and based on the novel Farewell, My Queen by Chantal Thomas. It gives a fictional account of the last days of Marie Antoinette through the eyes a young servant who read to the queen and refused to leave her side. The film stars Diane Kruger as Marie Antoinette, Léa Seydoux as the servant, and Virginie Ledoyen as the duchesse de Polignac. Like Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette, it too was filmed at Versailles and is full of elaborate costumes which should make for a visual feast.
The limited release of the film is perfectly timed to coincide with Bastille Day which is 14 July. I look forward to stopping by the Bastille Day festivities on East 60th Street on Sunday, 15 July (12:00-5:00pm) that are hosted by the French Institute Alliance Française. It should be a fun afternoon filled with pétanque, crêpes, canelés, fromages, and hopefully some macarons!
